Our Philosophy: Nurturing Confident Users of Tamil Language

At OLGC, the Tamil Language Department is committed to developing students who are confident in using Tamil Language while cultivating a strong appreciation for their cultural roots.

Our lessons are designed to be fun, engaging and meaningful, allowing students to experience Tamil Language as a living language used in everyday contexts. Through interactive activities, collaborative learning and cultural exposure, we encourage our students to develop confidence in speaking, reading and writing in Tamil Language. We believe that language learning is most effective when students are actively involved in the learning process, and our programmes are carefully designed to spark curiosity, creativity and joy in learning Tamil Language.

Our Curriculum

The department programmes and activities are aligned to the MOE Tamil Language syllabus, which focuses on developing students’ abilities in the four core language skills:

• Listening

• Speaking

• Reading

• Writing

Teachers incorporate interactive learning strategies, collaborative activities and differentiated instruction to cater to students’ diverse learning needs. Through meaningful tasks and authentic contexts, students learn to use Tamil Language confidently both in and beyond the classroom.

Key Learning Experiences

To enrich students’ learning journey, the Tamil Language Department provides a range of age-appropriate cultural and language experiences across the six years of primary school.

Speech and Drama (Primary 1–Primary 2)

Lower primary students participate in Speech and Drama lessons, where they explore the Tamil language through storytelling, role-play and performance. These sessions help students build confidence in speaking while strengthening their pronunciation, expression and creativity.

Cultural Performances (Primary 3–Primary 4)

Students in Primary 3 and Primary 4 are exposed to Tamil cultural performances, allowing them to appreciate traditional art forms such as music, dance and theatre. These experiences deepen their cultural understanding while strengthening their connection to the language.

Learning Journeys and Cultural Camp (Primary 5–Primary 6)

Upper primary students participate in learning journeys and cultural camps, where they explore aspects of Tamil heritage, traditions and community life. These authentic experiences allow students to apply their language skills while gaining a deeper appreciation of Tamil culture.

Mother Tongue Language Fortnight Programme

The Tamil Language Department organises an engaging six-year Mother Tongue Language Fortnight programme. Through a carefully scaffolded set of activities from Primary 1 to Primary 6, students experience different aspects of Tamil culture that reinforce language learning beyond the classroom.

Across their six-year journey, OLGC students are exposed to six key cultural domains: stories, food, games, festivals, traditional art forms and dance.

Primary 1 – Traditional Stories

Students are introduced to Tamil folktales through storytelling, puppetry and role-play, nurturing imagination and values such as kindness, honesty and respect.

Primary 2 – Traditional Food

Students explore traditional foods such as idli, dosa, pongal and murukku, learning vocabulary while understanding their cultural significance.

Primary 3 – Traditional Games

Students learn traditional games such as Pallanguzhi, Paramapadham, Aadupuli Aatam and Ainthu Kallu, developing teamwork and appreciation for traditional play.

Primary 4 – Festivals

Students learn about important Tamil festivals such as Pongal, Deepavali and Tamil New Year, connecting textbook learning with real-life cultural practices.

Primary 5 – Traditional Art Forms

Students explore art forms such as Kolam, Bharatanatyam, Villupattu and Therukoothu, gaining deeper appreciation of Tamil artistic heritage.

Primary 6 – Traditional Dance

Students are introduced to Bharatanatyam, learning about expressive gestures, storytelling through dance and cultural symbolism.

Student Platforms and Achievements

The Tamil Language Department provides students with opportunities to showcase their language abilities and build confidence in using Tamil.

Competitions and Showcases

Students are encouraged to participate in activities such as:

• Storytelling competitions

• Poetry recitation

• Oratorical presentations

• Creative writing activities

These platforms help students develop communication skills while fostering pride in the Tamil language.

Assembly Performances and Cultural Showcases

Students also present during school assemblies and special events, performing storytelling segments, skits or cultural showcases related to Tamil festivals and traditions.

Partnering Parents

Parents play an important role in supporting their child’s language development. The department encourages parents to:

• Speak Tamil Language with their children at home whenever possible

• Encourage reading of Tamil storybooks

• Provide opportunities to watch or listen to Tamil media

• Engage children in conversations about Tamil culture and traditions

Through this partnership between school and home, we nurture students who are confident Tamil speakers with a strong appreciation of their language and cultural heritage.
